those persons at the most prestigious and those at the least prestigious institutions (Table 6.5). In fact, the average publication rates for scientists at the most prestigious institutions are far above those of scientists in government, despite the much greater resources available to the latter group. However, it should be noted that most of the differences in publication rates are not statistically significant. This suggests that the variance in productivity among scientists at the most prestigious institutions is much greater than at the least prestigious institutions. The most prestigious institutions are distinguished by having a small number of highly prolific scientists. The modal or typical publication rates of scientists appear not to differ greatly across prestige categories. However, those few high producers are enough to make a very significant impact on the prestige and visibility of particular institutions within the scientific community.
